CAVANI STRING QUARTET

The
opening concert by the Cavani String Quartet will also be the opening concert
of the 2010 Westobou Festival in Augusta.
Formed in 1984, the Cavani Quartet was appointed
Quartet-in-Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1988, and was
awarded the prestigious Naumberg Chamber Music Award in 1989. In 2005, the Quartet became the first
recipient of the Guarneri String Quartet Residency Award from Chamber Music
America. The Quartet will be joined
by Augusta pianist Dr. Clara Park for the performance of a Piano Quintet.

Flutist Claire Chase is the First Prize
Winner of the 2008 Concert Artists Guild Competition. She creatively links traditional,
contemporary and experimental music with program choices that range from
Bach and Brahms to Boulez…and beyond.
Ms. Chase often appears in duo performances with Bridget Kibbey, the
winner of the 2007 Concert Artists Guild International Competition and
recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant.
Ms. Kibbey also appears regularly as a concerto soloist, chamber
music collaborator, and solo artist.

The Max Brod Trio
was formed during European Union-sponsored intercultural concerts in 2005,
during which musicians from the Czech Republic and Germany, each with a distinguished international
solo career and much chamber music expertise, decided to join forces. Czech violinist Petr Matejak has
previously performed on a HJCMS concert in 1999 as part of the Martinu
String Quartet.

A native of Croatia,
Martina Filjak is the winner of the 2009 Cleveland International Piano
Competition, as well as being awarded First Place at the 2007 International
Viotti Piano Competition, the 2008 Maria Canals International Piano
Competition in Barcelona and the 2001 International Johannes Brahms
Competition. This concert is
presented in honor of Vola Jacobs, concert pianist, who performed on the
HJCMS series in 1993, and the widow of HJCMS founder, Harry Jacobs.

the Sphinx Competition, this ensemble made its successful Carnegie Hall
debut during the Sphinx Gala Concert in October 2006 to rave reviews from
The New York Times. The ensemble
released their professional debut CD, “Taking the ‘A’ Train,” with the
White Pine Music label in 2007.
